What is Barbiecore? Furniture ideas for the home design trend

The Joybird x Barbie furniture collection features pieces like these Dreamhouse Soleil Dining Chairs and Teresa Dining Table.

All that glitters is not gold, but apparently, all that is pink is now Barbiecore.

OK, maybe not all that is pink, but the latest fashion and design trend makes a strong case. Fuchsia couches, blush poufs, and rose-colored rugs are all over the internet. Actress Anne Hathaway practically broke it after stepping out in a hot pink sequin dress and platform shoes.

That’s because Barbiecore revolves around, you guessed it, the iconic Mattel doll who has long peddled this particular hue. Whether fueled by the behind-the-scenes photos of actor Ryan Gosling and actress Margot Robbie — dressed to the Jazzercise nines for director Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie — or the fact that all trends seem to come back around (here’s looking at you, overalls), Barbiecore is taking life in plastic and making it fantastic for adults and children alike.

Barbiecore is “all about having fun with design,” says the Los Angeles-based designer known as Dani Dazey, whose self-described “human-sized dollhouses” have garnered tons of fans on social media. The trend is “taking it back to a time when we were less afraid of making bold decisions and embracing things that make us happy, despite what others think,” Dazey continues. “It doesn’t have to be totally juvenile either. There are lots of ways to elevate the Barbiecore aesthetic.”

For inspiration, look no further than Dazey’s approach at the newly opened Trixie Motel in Palm Springs. Full of playful pink spaces, the hotel — named after co-owner Brian Firkus’ drag persona Trixie Mattel — is filled with candy-colored decor that exudes a sense of whimsy. (You can see how the team transformed the entire property on Discovery+.)

Interested in trying out a few pieces in your own home? There are plenty of options to choose from. The team over at Los Angeles furniture company Joybird, for example, recently released limited-edition furniture that brings the Barbie Dreamhouse to life. The collection features an array of nostalgia-inspired beds, dressers, chairs, and more that offer playful yet sleek color choices, often with curvilinear shapes. A speckled marble dining table is accented with a gilded frame. A low-slung sofa stands on gold-capped legs.

“For us interior lovers, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Barbie Dreamhouse,” Gifty Walker, Joybird’s director of merchandising, said in a provided statement. “The Barbie x Joybird partnership is truly a full circle moment for our team, as many of us discovered and developed our personal, creative style while playing with our own Barbie Dreamhouses. It’s also a reminder to keep expressing our unique style, no matter what age we are!”

“Barbie style can be easily added to your space in a variety of ways,” Walker says.

Like those featured in the Joybird collection, jewel-toned fabrics are one way to “add a pop of color to a more neutral space or to layer on the bold in a more maximalist space,” according to Walker. Other glam-inspired features are “luxe marble” and “gold accents," Walker says.

Dazey likes to incorporate accent walls that feature playful prints or colors. They’re the “perfect backdrop” for a very particular kind of sofa: “Nothing makes my heart flutter quite like a gorgeous, pink velvet couch,” says the designer, who also has an apparel line featuring colorful prints.

But don’t forget about paint! You can utilize the classic Dreamhouse colors in pops of pink, lavender and turquoise shades — or throw them up on entire walls. California paint company Backdrop recently partnered with Barbie to create a trio of those signature shades, including the iconic pink hue and a blue that’s an exact match to the Dreamhouse pool.

“In addition to the fact that Barbie is so present in our culture right now, from fashion to film, I think there is a sense of escapism, nostalgia and joy to the Barbie aesthetic that we all really need right now,” Natalie Ebel, co-founder of Backdrop, said in a provided statement.

Ebel also notes that Barbie, with the doll's array of career moments, “has also evolved over the years and there is a new spirit of inclusivity and the evolution of the brand that has been amazing to watch."

“On a personal note, as a mother of two young daughters and a woman of Filipino descent, Barbie has become an incredibly powerful role model for young boys and girls,” Ebel continues. “I think that spirit is also resonating with consumers in a big way.”
