Embrace your DC fandom with mythical flare! 

Cryptozoic Entertainment, a company that specializes in collectibles, tabletop games, and trading cards, is reimagining DC characters as classic Greek sculptures in its Pantheon of Justice line. At this year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC), fans were able to view the highly detailed polyresin statues of Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman. 

The statues are each around 14 inches tall and include gold-accented versions of the character’s signature accessories. Cryptozoic Entertainment first began the Pantheon of Justice line with Wonder Woman and continued to branch out to other iconic DC figures, including Batman and Superman, who will be available next year.

The Pop Insider had an opportunity to chat with Cryptozoic Events Manager Javier Casillas to learn more about the drop and the process behind creating the collectibles with DC’s support. “If you see the statues, you will notice the Greek influence in them and they were inspired by Greek mythology sculptures, which is pretty awesome”, Casillas says. “Wonder Woman was our first sculpture — full polyresin — and the fans loved it, so why not include the two other iconic characters [Batman and Superman] in the DC trinity?” 

Decked out in full Grecian glory, the statues make even the toughest DC character look like a mythical god (enter Batman). The marble-colored Wonder Woman figure was modeled after Venus de Milo and features gold-accented versions of her iconic bracelets, lasso, and other accessories. The spear is also removable and the rim of the shield is inscribed with Wonder Woman’s classic epithet in Greek lettering: “Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules.” The aesthetics of Greek sculpture and the heroic branding of the comic book characters combine to create display-worthy figures that nearly transcend the branding of the characters that inspire them.

As with all licensed collectibles, companies like Cryptozoic needed to get a sign-off from the brand — in this case, DC Comics — before creating the statues. “DC wants to ensure their property is represented in the best way possible, because it’s something that fans come to expect,” Casillas explains. However, he says that the company knew what to expect, thanks to its long-standing relationship with the comic book publisher.

These Greek statues differ from the other collectibles Cryptozoic creates in quality and design value. Moving away from the vinyl material the company uses to create their other lower priced collectibles — which range anywhere from $20-60 — the Pantheon of Justice figures are made with polyresin, a beautiful-yet-delicate material with a sheen similar to fiberglass. Casillas recommends storing the statue in the included box or in a display case to avoid damage.

According to Casillas, Cryptozoic plans to add other members of the DC squad to this collection in the future.
