ROCKPORT – Malcolm Cram White Jr., 77, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 23, 2022. The oldest child of the late Sarah Hasler and Malcolm Cram White, he was born on Nov. 27, 1944, in Detroit, Mich.

Malcolm grew up in Rumford and graduated from Stephens High School in 1962. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and received a master’s degree in Business Administration from Columbia University in 1969. He then went into Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and served in the Navy, both active and reserves for 18 years, retiring with the rank of commander in 1992.

Malcolm was introduced to his wife Nancy (Blake) Baker, of Marblehead, Mass., by her brother, Robert Blake and his wife, Sharon. Malcolm and Nancy married on Feb. 16, 1980, in the middle of a blizzard, and Malcolm instantly inherited a full, loving family, which included two children, Richard and Kate, and a beagle named Charlie.

Malcolm had a fascinating engineer’s mind. He could absorb ideas quickly and had a great memory for details. This ability served him well in various professional positions, from his work at the Naval Underwater Systems Center to Polaroid Corporation, Digital Equipment, and Riley Medical.

He was humorous and quick-witted and was known to invent complex mechanical pranks to entertain the unsuspecting neighbor or family members. He loved being outdoors, and he enjoyed spending time at the summer home that he shared with his family in Down East Maine, often island hopping on their boat and eating lobster on the beach with friends.

Malcolm and Nancy moved to Rockport in 1987 after a quick stint in Topsfield, Mass. Once in Maine, Malcolm fully immersed himself into the community, finding like-minded friends in the First Universalist Church and the Coastal Mountain Land Trust.

Malcolm is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Rockport; their daughter, Kate Jefferson and her husband, John Twomey, of Falls Church, Va.; their granddaughter, Kaia Jefferson, who attends the University of Vermont; and Nancy’s brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sharon Blake, of Wellesley, Mass.

He was predeceased by their son, Richard Baker.

He is also survived by his sisters Nancy Benway of Vancouver, Wash., and Joanne Bartlett and her husband. Gayton of Portland; as well as three nieces, one nephew, and their spouses and children.

There will be a celebration of Malcolm’s life in the spring of 2023.
