Bruno’s: Team behind hit restaurant Caravel announce new floating bar

The restaurateurs behind Caravel, the floating dining room on the Regent’s Canal, are opening a new bar in November.

Fin and Lorcan Spiteri, sons of Sessions Arts Club operator Jon Spiteri and Rochelle Canteen co-founder Melanie Arnold, will launch their project on November 11. It will be called Bruno’s, named for Fin’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross. Mercifully, it will not be dog-themed.

Like its sibling restaurant, the bar will sit in a converted barge, moored up beside Caravel between Hoxton and Islington. The Spiteris say Bruno’s is set to channel bars from both New York and London; as such, it will be a warm room of low-lights, with velvet armchairs at one end. There will also be bar seating with views of the canal, through the barge’s portholes, while at the far end of the boat will be two marble tables with room for 12 drinkers. The brothers have designed the space themselves.

As with Caravel, at Bruno’s Fin will take the lead with the drinks, drawing on his time working at bars 69 Colebrooke Row, Quo Vadis, Untitled and Ladies & Gents, as well as his years as a cocktail consultant for the likes of Polpo and Harrods.

Drinks will include the Peach Drop, which mixes vodka with lemon juice, peach syrup, egg whites and burnt sugar; and the Cookout, where barbecued lemon juice and orgeat are stirred in with mezcal. There will also be natural-oriented wine list.

Lorcan, meanwhile, will prepare bar snacks which, the brothers say, will be a nod to the “lunchables” of their childhood — albeit a more grown-up kind, made up of saucisson, soppressata and cheeses — which will be served on steel lunch trays.

Fin said of the opening: “I have always felt at home in bars, having spent years working at some of the best establishments in London and it has been a long since been a dream of Lorcan and I to open our own.

“We have loved every minute of Caravel, and so when we were given the opportunity to open something just next door, we jumped at it. Bruno’s will be a place that doesn't take itself too seriously, but will be a stylish spot to spend an evening drinking some banging drinks.”

The bar will open from 5pm to 11.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

Bruno’s will open on November 11 at 172 Shepherdess Walk, N1 7JL. For more information, follow @Brunos.Cocktails
